FBI, Indonesia never sought Malaysia police's help in yacht seizure, says IGP

THE Federal Bureau of Investigation and Indonesian authorities never contacted Malaysian police to assist in the seizure of a yacht belonging to billionaire Low Taek Jho, aka Jho Low, said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

“No, they never contacted us,” he said in a brief answer to the media at Bukit Aman this morning.

The Equanimity super yacht, said to have been bought with money allegedly siphoned from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), was seized by Indonesian police on the island of Bali last week.

Low issued a statement following the seizure accusing the US Department of Justice (DoJ) of overreach.

A spokesman for the fugitive businessman and confidant of Prime Minister Najib Razak said despite staying asset forfeiture proceedings, the DoJ continued its “deeply flawed and politically motivated” allegations of impropriety.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak, however, said yesterday there was no proof to connect Jho Low to the super yacht.

“I have seen the documents in the suit. It was alleged that it (the yacht) belonged to Jho Low, but the investigation was suspended last year. Now there are no documents saying as such,” Salleh said in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“The fact is, the source of the charge is contained in the US DoJ’s civil claim that has been pending since August last year. To this day, the DoJ has not been able to establish that Jho Low is the owner of the luxury yacht or that it was bought with 1MDB funds.

Salleh was referring to the civil forfeiture suits filed by the DoJ to seize assets bought with billions of dollars allegedly stolen from 1MDB.

The assets include the US$250 million (RM1 billion) Equanimity, allegedly purchased by Low, who is a central figure in US investigations into criminal wrongdoing linked to 1MDB. – March 6, 2018.

  • Given how the Police, MACC and AG are actively obfuscating the 1MDB crimes, it's very clear to international investigators how pointless and useless to contact Malaysia.
