PERLIS Perikatan Nasional (PN) will present the name of its menteri besar candidate for the approval of the Perlis’ Raja Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail this afternoon.

Perlis PN chairman Shukri Ramli said central PN delivered a letter to Perlis PN instructing it to present the state ruler with the name of the menteri besar candidate, and informing it that the appointment of the new menteri besar must have the consent of the Perlis raja as stated in the state constitution.

“Yesterday, we (Perlis PN) held a meeting among the party leadership and we unanimously agreed to present a new menteri besar candidate to the raja of Perlis this afternoon,” he told Bernama today.

Shukri, who is also Perlis PAS commissioner, said the formation of a new “clean and stable” state government under PN is proceeding smoothly.

He said he was informed that the swearing-in ceremony for the new menteri besar will be held soon after getting the approval from the ruler.

PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin in a meeting with Perlis PN machinery a few months ago said if PN controls Perlis, then the menteri besar would be appointed from among PAS representatives as the party is a senior member of the coalition.

In the polls, PN managed to sweep 14 out of 15 state seats in addition to winning the state’s three parliamentary seats (Padang Besar, Arau, and Kangar).

Only one state seat was won by Pakatan Harapan (PH) through PKR member Gan Ay Lin, who defended her Indera Kayangan seat.

Barisan Nasional on the other hand recorded its worst general election result in the state when it failed to defend any seats, including Bintong, where interim Perlis menteri besar Azlan Man lost to PAS candidate Fakhrul Anwar Ismail, who won with a majority of 4,329 votes in a six-cornered contest. – Bernama, November 21, 2022.
