Umno leaders at WTC to decide party’s future


SEVERAL Umno leaders have been seen at the party’s headquarters in the World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, to attend a series of meetings, which to include the political bureau and the Supreme Council.

Among those seen arriving as early as 11am were vice president Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Supreme Council member Ab Rauf Yusoh and working secretary Sumali Reduan.

Also present were Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Bung Moktar Radin, Selangor liaison committee chairman Noh Omar, Terengganu liaison committee chairman Ahmad Said, and two other Supreme Council members:Johari Abdul Ghani and Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub.

Last night, party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said in a tweet that the party would hold its political bureau meeting at noon to be followed by a Supreme Council meeting at 3pm.

The BN hierarchy is also scheduled to meet today at 8pm.

Based on the official results announced by the Election Commission, BN only managed to win 30 seats in yesterday’s election.

Yesterday, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party respected the people’s decision, adding that it was a big signal to the political coalition.

He also said that BN was ready to be a bridge to strengthen relationship between states in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

Zahid, the Umno president, said at the same time BN was also prepared to put aside its prior differing sentiments and would focus on restoring the party’s strength, particularly to overcome current challenges and better understand the needs of the new generation.

The official results released by the EC showed that Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 76 seats, while its coalition with DAP in Sarawak won five seats and Muda one seat, making 82 in total. 

Perikatan Nasional and PAS won 51 and 22 seats respectively, for a combined total of 73 seats, followed by GPS (22), GRS (6), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1) and Independent candidates (2). – Bernama, November 20, 2022.
