JOHOR Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi today urged Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to resign following the party’s abysmal performance in yesterday’s general election.

Onn Hafiz said it is clear the Malays have rejected Umno.

“Umno has fallen. Umno and Barisan Nasional won only nine parliamentary seats in Johor while we did not win a single parliamentary seat in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Malacca, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow; Umno leaders, including myself, have to listen to the people who spoke through their votes yesterday,” he said on Facebook.

He said Barisan Nasional component parties had also lost many credible leaders who were felled in the polls.

“We must be brave enough to make changes for the future. Efforts to restore and improve the party must begin now. If we do not change now, we will not win a single seat in future.

“Therefore, with all due respect and appreciation, I asked that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi resign as party president with immediate effect, just as Najib Abdul Razak did in 2018,” he said.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 76 seats, while its coalition member Sarawak DAP five seats and Muda one, for a total of 82 seats.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) and PAS won 51 and 22 seats, respectively, for a combined total of 73 seats.

Barisan Nasional (BN) won 30, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (six), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1) and two independents one each.

Kota Raja Umno Youth chief Sheikh Weshal Sheikh Ahmad agreed Zahid must take full responsibility for BN’s defeat.

Sheikh Weshal also urged Zahid’s deputy Mohamad Hasan to step down as he had promised to do should BM lose the election.

“We call on Zahid to take responsibility for the loss and resign just like what Najib did after GE14.

“We also call on Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan to fulfil his promise to also resign if Barisan Nasional did not win the election,” Sheikh Weshal said.

Sheikh Weshal said Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob must be given the mandate to negotiate with other parties.

“Ismail Sabri Yaakob will ensure the talks and more open, calm and for the good of the party and not for personal reason.” – November 20, 2022.

  • What Zahid does next will clearly shows what kind of a person & leader he is either to exit gracefully as the people has spoken and that his call for the election is a mistake which was highlighted to him in advance as taking the few by election and state election was no yardstick. Too eager to secure his position as PM and wield his way out from the court cases he is facing he was adamant a winner takes all. He gamble his way through and must do the right thing is that to resign. Will he do it else its up to umno members to show the door to him on his face directly.

  • Zahid must resign. He can no longer be the President of UMMO if he has led them to a disastrous election outcome. A good leader will resign. No two ways about it.
