PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) made an almost complete sweep of the state seats in Perlis to overthrow Barisan Nasional (BN).
PN won 14 seats, except for Indera Kayangan, which was won by Pakatan Harapan (PH).
This means BN failed to win any seats in the state assembly.
“With this (PN) managed to obtain a majority of more than 50% of the contested seats,” announced Election Commission (SPR) chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh, early this morning.
PN also won all three parliamentary seats in Perlis.
In GE14, BN controlled two parliamentary seats namely Padang Besar and Arau while Kangar was held by PH.
The PN wave in Perlis was influenced by the decision of BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi not to re-nominate the two state Umno commanders Shahidan Kassim and Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
Shahidan is the incumbent of Arau while Zahidi is the incumbent of Padang Besar.
Shahidan won the Arau seat under the PN banner.
Zahidi, who contested as an independent in the Padang Besar parliamentary seat and the Titi Tinggi state seat lost in both.
Meanwhile in Perak, PN took control of the majority of seats in the northern part of the state, from Pengkalan Hulu under the Gerik parliamentary constituency to Bukit Chandan and Manong under the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary constituency.
Except for Aulong and Pokok Asam under the Taiping parliamentary constituency that PH won, PN scored victories in all state seats under the Bagan Serai, Larut, Bukit Gantang, Padang Rengas and Lenggong parliamentary seats. – November 20, 2022.
