PAKATAN Harapan’s Amirudin Shari has thumped Gombak incumbent Mohamed Azmin Ali with a 12,729 vote margin.

The Selangor Menteri Besar obtained 72,267 votes, while the Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director got 59,538 votes.

Azmin had helmed the Gombak seat for three terms, winning under PKR’s ticket.

In the 2018 general election, Azmin won the seat with 48,721-vote majority.

Azmin was widely seen as the mastermind behind the infamous Sheraton Move that resulted in the collapse of the PH government after just 22-months.

He led 10 other PKR lawmakers to defect and change their political alliance, allowing the rise of the PN government, led by Muhyiddin Yassin.

Azmin was made Minister of Economic Affairs under the PN-led government.

Muhyiddin’s regime however lasted only 17-months.

When Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Ismail Sabri Yaakob formed the government, Azmin was made Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry.

The others who contested in Gombak were BN’s Megat Zulkarnain Omarin who received 30,723 votes, Pejuang’s Aziz Jamaluddin Mohd Tahir (2,223) and Independent Zulkifli Ahmad (675).  – November 20, 2022.
