Umno strongmen fall like nine pins

UMNO which pushed for snap polls is getting hammered with several of its strongmen suffering stunning defeats at the general election.

Veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who was the longest serving Umno lawmaker was finally toppled in Gua Musang seat by Perikatan Nasional”s Mohd Azizi Abu Naim who won by 163 votes.

Tengku Razaleigh served for 11 terms as the member of parliament and made his electoral debut in 1974.

Caretaker finance minister and Umno newbie Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz lost in Kuala Selangor to incumbent Dzulkefly Ahmad, the former Health Minister in the 22-month Pakatan Harapan government.

Dzulkefly retained the seat with a 1,200 vote majority.

Caretaker health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who was forced out of Rembau and stood in PH Sungai Buloh fortress has lost to Ramanan Ramakrishnan.

Former Federal Territiories Minister Tengku Adnan lost in Putrajaya to caretaker Education Minister Radzi Jidin, the first time the federal administrative seat had fallen to the opposition.

Umno also lost the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat after incumbent and BN Selangor state chairman Noh Omar was dropped.

PN Mohd Zulkafperi beat BN’s Habibah Mohd Yusof in the four cornered fight.

Its party vice president, Mahdzir Khalid, who is a key ally of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob lost in Padang Terap. He lost to PN’s Nurul Amin Hamid with 11,000 votes.

PH Salahuddin Ayub has retained the Pulai seat garnering 64,900 votes defeating Johor Umno deputy chairman Nur Jazlan (31,726) and PN Loh Kah Yong (20,677). Nur Jazlan was having another tilt at the seat after having lost it in the last election to Salahuddin.

Umno has to date officially retained Tampin, Parit Sulong, Ayer Hitam, Simpang Renggam, Sembrong, Tenggara, Kota Tinggi, Pengerang, Pontian, Kimanis, Beaufort and  Kalabakan. – November 19, 2022.
