Perikatan Nasional, GE15’s surprise coalition thus far

MUHYIDDIN Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) is full of surprises this general election (GE).

The coalition has thus far secured 26 parliamentary seats, even causing a few upsets along the way. 

They are currently neck-and-neck with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in terms of number of parliamentary seats won, while leaving Barisan Nasional (BN) trailing by more than 10 parliamentary seats. 

The coalition’s chairman Muhyiddin has comfortably retained his Pagoh seat with a majority of 10,007 votes, while PAS’ Abdul Hadi Awang also secured his seat with a whopping 41,729 seats. 

The coalition, which contested in Terengganu and Kelantan using PAS’ logo, has caused an upset in Gua Musang, defeating its incumbent Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah by a thin majority of 163 votes. 

PN has officially claimed all eight parliamentary seats in Terengganu. 

Among the upsets in the state was Kuala Nerus, where former PAS party man Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, who contested under BN’s flag, lost the parliamentary seat to Alias Razali.

Alias won by a 29,765 vote majority. 

In Langkawi, PN’s Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah caused a major upset by defeating incumbent and two-time prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Suhaimi managed to get 25,463 votes, bettering second place Armishah Siraj by 13,518 votes. 

Dr Mahathir came in fourth with 4,556 votes, behind PH’s Zabidi Yahya, who got 5,417 votes. Dr Mahathir lost his deposit.

Among the other seats won by PN are Padang Terap, Alor Setar, Sik, Tumpat, Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Ketereh, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Tanah Merah, Besut, Kuala Terengganu, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Sabak Bernam, Tg Karang, Masjid Tanah, Mersing, Labuan, Beluran and Saratok.
