A NUMBER of areas in Klang and Shah Alam – some in flood prone zones – were hit by flash floods, following continuous downpour from 10pm last night.
In Shah Alam, flash floods had hit residents in Sections 13 and 22, Padang Jawa, I-City, Bukit Lanchong, and Taman Sri Muda.
Meanwhile in neighbouring Klang, flooding was reported in Taman Sentosa, Kota Raja, Taman Sri Andalas, Taman Chi Liung, and GM Klang.
Several residents of Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam were reported to have evacuated their homes as soon as the water level began to rise due to heavy rain last night.
Residents in surrounding areas also moved their vehicles to higher ground.
“The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is inspecting the situation and has started operations in the areas involved.
“Further developments regarding the flood situation will be communicated from time to time, director Norazam Khamis said.
Outgoing Klang MP Charles Santiago once again highlighted the failures of the authorities to be better prepared for floods, especially during the election season.
“It is 48 hours until polling day. Where is @sprgovmy (the Election Commission’s) flood SOP?” he said on Twitter.
He added that many people in Klang had been calling him with their fears over the rain and floods.
“We were hoping this wouldn’t happen. It’s worrying that @metmalaysia predicted heavy rain till 4am.
“While it’s good to see MB @AmirudinShari & @ganabatirau1 on the ground, the government needs to urgently activate its emergency services to respond to people’s needs. Families have sent out help alerts to move their parents to higher floors,” Santiago added.
Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari visited Taman Melawis, Klang at 2am today to survey the floods.
“A flood mitigation project is underway (for the area) but is facing difficulties. I will contact KTM tomorrow to solve this problem,” he tweeted.
