PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) will only strike up a partnership with other parties for a majority post-general election only if their principles align with the Malay coalition’s, Muhyiddin Yassin said.
In an interview with Astro Awani, the PN chairman said the partners must prioritise Islam.
“We’ll see how things go. If on November 19, no party manages to win 112 seats, then (PN) will have an emergency meeting to think about our strategy,” said Muhyiddin.
He said PN will not sacrifice its principles on Islam and Malay rights.
Muhyiddin said he is confident his coalition will win the Malay vote and that victory is all but certain.
“There is a sense of worry and fear among voters (about what will happen) if the nation is put in the hands of (a party) which could bring about disaster or a party that is involved in misdeeds such as corruption.”
Perikatan Nasional has been giving off mixed signals about whether it would work with Umno after the polls in the event both parties fail to secure a majority.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan earlier this week said he was confident that Barisan Nasional (BN) and PN would be willing to put their differences aside after the election to forge an alliance.
Muhyiddin subsequently tweeted that Takiyuddin has not been authorised to represent PN in pact talks with BN. The Bersatu president remained adamant that PN would not partner either BN or Pakatana Harapan.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed working with PAS. – November 17, 2022.
