More than 2,000 people still sheltering from floods

AUTHORITIES have reported that the number of people seeking shelter from floods in four states – Selangor, Johor, Kelantan and Malacca – had decreased by 9.30pm last night.

In SELANGOR, the Social Welfare Department said there were 129 people in shelters, compared to 187 earlier in the day.

Three relief centres are still open: SMK Jeram in Kuala Selangor, and Dewan Sri Nakhoda and Dewan Simpang 5 in Sabak Bernam.

In JOHOR, there are 327 people in shelters in three districts (Tangkak, Kluang and Segamat).

The disaster management committee said the evacuees were being accommodated at five relief centres in Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak (39), Dewan Komuniti Tasek, Segamat (14), and Dewan Utama Kampung Ithnin Maarof in Kluang (32).

“SK Simpang 5 Darat and Sekolah Agama Simpang 5 Darat, Tangkak, are housing 134 and 108 people respectively,” it said, adding that they were forced to remain at the centres because of the stagnant floodwaters.

In KELANTAN, according to the Social Welfare Department, there were 1,677 people in shelters, down from 1,925 in the afternoon, at SK Tok Deh, SK Kubang Kual, Putat Tujoh, SK Sri Kiambang, Masjid Mukim Padang Licin, SK Gual Periok and SK Gual Tinggi in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas.

In MALACCA, it was reported that 37 people were in shelters, as of 8pm.

In SARAWAK, 19 people from Rh Lawai Kampung Selindung in Limbang were being housed at Dewan Masyarakat Medamit.

In PERAK, 466 people were in six relief centres as of 8pm, with authorities opening shelters in Larut Matang and Kampung Padang Serai Dalam.

There was an increase in evacuees in Manjung, especially at Surau Sekolah Agama Rakyat Imam Syafie Batu Hampar Beruas (housing 143 people), followed by Dewan SMK Layang-Layang Kiri in Perak Tengah (118). – Bernama, November 17, 2022.
