MCA has suggested that the government appoint a Chinese mayor or deputy mayor in Chinese-majority urban cities like Ipoh and Johor Baru, The Sun reported yesterday.

The daily said MCA president Liow Tiong Lai made the suggestion to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“I have told the prime minister that we should consider the feelings of the Chinese. If Barisan Nasional (BN) handles the feelings of the Chinese well, a swing in Chinese votes back to BN (in the next general election) is not impossible,” he was quoted as saying.

Liow also said there was a need to increase the number of Chinese civil servants so that the Chinese could feel that they too were part of nation-building.

He called on the community to stay united and make the most of their political strength within the government system and fight for resources to assist them. – June 1, 2017.
