SYED Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will defend his parliamentary seat in the 15th general election, said Malaysian United Democratic Alliance deputy president (Muda) Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz.

Amira announced that the former Youth and Sports Minister was the party’s choice for the seat that Syed Saddiq had won as a Bersatu candidate in 2018.

Syed Saddiq will face Muar Umno youth chief Mohd Helmy Abdul Latif and Johor PAS state commissioner Abdullah Hussin in the coming election.

In accepting the party’s decision Syed Saddiq said the people of Muar gave him a chance to provide his services to the constituency in 2018, when he was 25 years old.

“Though I went on to be a minister during the Pakatan Harapan government for 22 months, I never once failed to return to Muar and assist the people there.

“With a humble heart, I am here again to ask the people of Muar to ‘renew my contract’ and be the voice of the people in parliament,” he said.

He won the seat in the last general election by a 6,953-vote majority after polling 22,341 votes. He beat Barisan Nasional’s Razali Ibrahim who polled 15,388 and Abdul Aziz Talib from PAS who received 4,354 votes

Syed Saddiq is the latest candidate to be announced by the party, which last week revealed the names of three candidates that would carry its banner in GE15.

The three are: Danial Abd Majeed who will contest Kepala Batas, Penang, Siti Rahayu Baharin (Tanjong Karang, Selangor) and Lim Wei Jiet (Tanjung Piai, Johor).

On Monday, the party said its vice-president Shahrizal Denci will stand in Kota Marudu in Sabah, marking its electoral debut in the state. – November 2, 2022.
