MCA said today it will be nominating a parliamentary candidate for Batu, Kuala Lumpur, instead of MIC, as was announced by Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last night.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong told reporters that the change was made following discussions with Zahid last night.

He said MCA was given Batu in exchange for Padang Serai, which had been given to MIC.

“After meeting with the BN chairman, it’s confirmed that Batu is indeed MCA,” Wee said.

Yesterday, Zahid – when unveiling BN’s candidates for the general election – announced that MIC’s A. Kohilan Pillay would be standing in Batu.

However, Wee today said Yew Teong Lock would stand instead.

Wee’s announcement this morning could also explain MIC’s decision to skip the announcement ceremony last night.

The party is also holding an emergency meeting today about the election.

Previously, sources said MIC was upset over seat allocations.

Earlier today, MIC president S.A. Vigneswaran described the current political drama within BN as a “family issue” and said that the party’s central working committee was meeting to resolve it.

Meanwhile, deputy president M. Saravanan said MIC’s no-show last night was because its prospective candidates were busy with preparations in their respective constituencies.

MCA’s 17 new faces

Wee also said that MCA is bringing in 17 new faces for this election, for which its candidates will compete in 44 constituencies.

This also means MIC will be contesting in only nine seats.

Wee added that MCA was given the Bandar Tun Razak seat in Kuala Lumpur in a swap deal, with Umno to stand in Wangsa Maju. – November 2, 2022.
