GERAKAN Tanah Air (GTA) has identified 17 out of 26 parliamentary seats in Johor for the coalition to contest in the general election (GE), its protem deputy chairman Mukhriz Mahathir said. 

He said all of them are Malay-majority seats, including Pagoh where the incumbent is Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin. 

“However, the list of candidates will be finalised tomorrow before being officially announced on November 2. Of course, we are serious about offering candidates, we are not participating for fun.

“We are aware that we are in for a tough fight from long-established parties in Johor such as Umno,” Mukhriz, who is also Pejuang president, said after launching the Johor GTA machinery in Batu Pahat today. 

It was reported previously that GTA was eyeing to contest 120 parliamentary seats in the GE. The coalition consists of Pejuang, the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (Iman), Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and Parti Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa).

On several coalitions declining to cooperate with GTA for the GE, Mukhriz said this could be because they had already finalised their seat distribution. 

“When we discuss political cooperation, there certainly would be seats they would need to sacrifice for other coalitions, so that could be the reason,” Mukhriz said.

The Election Commission has fixed November 19 as polling day, November 5 for nominations while early voting will take place on November 15. – Bernama, October 29, 2022.
