MUDA has asked for less than 15 parliamentary seats in the upcoming election (GE15), the party’s deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said.
The Puteri Wangsa assemblyman in Johor said her party would meet with Pakatan Harapan (PH) again over the next few days to finalise the seats as part of its electoral pact with PH.
“Discussions have been positive. I can say that 70% (of the seat allocation) have been completed while the rest are overlapping seats,” she told the press at PKR headquarters.
She added that Muda did not ask to be given seats held by PH in the last election.
On October 12, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said that the coalition would work with Muda in the upcoming election.
He added, however, that the PH presidential council decided that it would be in the form of an electoral pact, instead of accepting Muda as a component party—as that would require the approval of the Registrar of Societies.
Muda initially applied to be a component party in the coalition. PH then formed a committee to handle negotiations with the youth-based party.
PH then set three conditions for Muda – that it would back PH’s prime ministerial candidate, that it would not demand to stand in seats held by a PH incumbent, and that it would obtain the permission of the coalition’s presidential council if it wanted to work with other parties.
Muda is no stranger to working with PH, having reached an agreement with the coalition in the Johor elections to run for seven seats in the 56-seat assembly.
Amira went on to win in Puteri Wangsa with a majority of 7,114 votes, seeing off five other candidates, including Ng Yew Aik (Barisan Nasional), Khairil Anwar Razali (Pejuang), Loh Kah Yong (Perikatan Nasional), Steven Choong (Parti Bangsa Malaysia) and independent candidate Adzrin Adam. – October 23, 2022.
