Possible unlawful acts during GE15 if EC fails to act now, warns Dr Mahathir

THERE are several flaws regarding the upcoming federal polls that the Election Commission (EC) is not addressing, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said. 

If ignored, the former prime minister said, it could lead to several unlawful acts during the course of the election period, including rampant corruption and fraudulence.

He said political parties could use the advantage of allowing voters to bring in mobile phones into the polling centres for their benefit.

“For example, a mobile phone could reveal a voter’s secret.

“Voters can show over their phone who they have voted for a certain party, and later the party also will bribe them with money,” the Langkawi incumbent claimed in a Facebook post today.

He called on the EC to bar mobile phones inside polling centres. 

“Can’t it (EC) make the ruling (preventing) mobile phones while people are casting their ballots?” the nonagenarian questioned.

Today, the EC set November 19 as polling day for the general election. 

Nomination day is on November 5 and early voting will be held on November 15. 

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh made the announcement at a press conference after chairing a special meeting on the general election in Putrajaya today.

The chairman did not take any questions from the media after the press conference. 

Dr Mahathir, who is planning to defend the Langkawi parliamentary seat under his newly founded Gerakan Tanah Air party banner, said the EC should fix the flaws before polling day. – October 20, 2022.
