WITH the date for the general election (GE) to be announced tomorrow by the Election Commission (EC), seat talks between Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have not started yet, said Muda election director Amira Aisya Abd Aziz.

“To be honest, official seat negotiations with PH haven’t begun yet,” Amira, who is also Muda’s deputy president, said in a Facebook post today.

Last week, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said that the coalition will work together with Muda in the upcoming polls as an electoral pact.

Anwar said the council will be discussing details of their cooperation, such as seat allocations and logo.

Amira claimed that she had contacted PH leaders to ask for a meeting with the coalition’s presidential council but said it did not take place till today.

“People are asking us where Muda is contesting,” she said.

“So, seat negotiations between Muda and PH have got to start immediately,” she added.

Amira said that Muda had no issues with the initial terms set during discussions on the electoral pact.

The three conditions set by PH to form an electoral pact with Muda includes the youth-based party’s backing for PH’s prime ministerial candidate, that no party would demand to contest in seats held by their respective incumbents, and that Muda will need to obtain the PH presidential council’s permission if it wanted to work with other parties.

Amira added that the idea for the opposition is to move as a single coalition, to avoid overlapping fights over seats and to focus on the GE together. 

Sharing Muda’s views, she said it is necessary for the party to return the country’s honour into the hands of the people. – October 19, 2022.
