THE Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition has named former inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador as one of its potential candidates to contest in the coming general election.

Pejuang information chief Ulya Aqamah Husamudin said Hamid’s name was shortlisted as a potential candidate to go up against Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan in Rembau, Negri Sembilan.

“It is yet to be finalised, but he is a potential,” said Ulya Aqamah.

Mohamad, a former menteri besar for the state, is set to contest in Rembau, replacing Khairy Jamaluddin, the Rembau MP since 2008.

Hamid on the other hand is entering his first ever election should GTA decide to name him as candidate.

The former police chief spent most of his career as a special branch officer, and was director before he was promoted to top cop by Dr Mahathir Mohamad early in the short-lived Pakatan Harapan administration.

Hamid was a controversial figure prior to PH victory in 2018, openly criticising the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) dealings.

He was transferred to the Prime Minister’s Department but chose to resign from the police force.

He was reappointed as a senior police officer a month after PH came to power.

The Malaysian Insight is waiting for a response from Hamid on his rumoured foray into politics.

On October 10, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of parliament, sending the country to the polls.

The Election Commission is set to announce nomination and polling dates on Thursday. – October 17, 2022.
