UMNO’S attempts to lure PAS back to its clutches have failed, which youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, were due to Bersatu offering the Islamist party too tempting a cherry to remain in Perikatan Nasional.
This cherry, according to Asyraf in a Facebook post earlier today, was Bersatu promising PAS 47 safe seats in the coming general election.
“As in the previous Malacca: Umno offered five seats to PAS, but Bersatu promised 11 seats.
Asyraf said that PAS stated the 47-seat offer during the latest round of talks with his party.
The Umno youth chief insisted that party leaders had shown patience with PAS in trying to keep their Muafakat Nasional alliance alive, despite the latter’s subsequent deal to join Perikatan Nasional.
However, “co-operation based on interests rather than mere sincerity, only leads to betrayal and damage,” according to Asyraf.
PAS decided not to work with Barisan Nasional (BN) in the general election because the coalition was tainted with corruption, party president Abdul Hadi Awang said earlier today.
He said Umno was still lax about enforcing Islam and that it was too focused on power, to the point that the party was demanding elections now. – October 14, 2022.
