PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today suggested that Pahang Umno be given a copy of the Federal Constitution after it has nominated Najib Razak as a candidate for the Pekan parliamentary seat.

Malaysiakini reported that Anwar had also said Umno should seek advice from its lawyers.

“I think someone should send them (a copy) of the Federal Constitution,” he said in jest.

“They need to understand (why the idea is not feasible). And I suggest that one of Umno’s lawyers advise them.”

Earlier today, Pekan Umno division deputy chief Zamri Ramly confirmed that the jailed former prime minister was included as a potential candidate for the Pekan seat in the upcoming general election.

He said Najib is among five candidates nominated by the division.

Zamri said they have no plans to name any of Najib’s children as candidates for the seat and claimed that the seat will be returned to Najib if the latter gets a royal pardon.

“There are no plans to place Najib’s children to contest the Pekan seat even if the former is not eligible to contest,” Zamri was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia.

“Instead, whoever is chosen will return the seat to Najib if he gets a pardon.”

Najib is currently standing trial for corruption involving RM2.28 billion in 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds.

He faces 25 charges – four for abuse of power and 21 for money laundering – for offences committed between 2011 and 2013.

He is currently serving 12 years in Kajang Prison, having been convicted of misappropriating SRC International funds. – October 13, 2022.
