JAILED former prime minister Najib Razak’s bid to attend parliament from prison will be heard by Kuala Lumpur High Court on October 19.

His lawyers have said that the case still needed to be heard, despite Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob dissolving parliament on Monday.

Lawyer M. Kogilambigai said the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will need time to look into the submissions filed by Najib’s lawyers.

“We know there was a sense of urgency (to hear Najib’s application), but it no longer exists because parliament has been dissolved,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Shafee Abdullah, representing Najib, wanted the application to be heard this Friday.

He said that it was pertinent that the matter be heard immediately as it also was a case for whether Najib can be nominated for elections in future.

Judge Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid said he will give the AGC one week to review the submissions.

He also told the AGC to file its written submissions in reply before Wednesday.

On October 3, the Prisons Department rejected Najib’s request to attend parliament.

Shafee then filed a judicial review to challenge the decision.

Najib is currently serving 12 years in Kajang Prison, having been convicted of misappropriating SRC International funds.

Najib is also standing trial for corruption involving RM2.28 billion in 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds. He faces 25 charges – four for abuse of power and 21 for money laundering – for offences committed between 2011 and 2013.

The Election Commission will be meeting on October 20 to fix the date for the election. – October 12, 2022.
