A WITNESS in jailed former prime minister Najib Razak’s corruption trial told Kuala Lumpur High Court that he was introduced to Najib by fugitive Penang-born businessman Low Taek Jho.

Cheah Tek Kuang, a former AmBank managing director, reiterated his statement this morning during cross-examination by lead prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram.

Sri Ram asked Cheah to explain if Low was already at Najib’s home when he arrived or if Low was in the same car him as they drove towards Najib’s house.

“He was in a different car (in the same convoy). When I walked to the house, he (Low) introduced me to Najib.

“He went to one room and I was in another room, after getting Najib to sign a few documents, I left,” Cheah said before Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah.

Last week, Cheah gave similar testimony when he was grilled by Najib’s lead counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

Cheah said he went to Najib’s home to assist the Pekan MP in opening an AmBank account.

Najib is standing trial for corruption involving RM2.28 billion in 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds. He faces 25 charges – four for abuse of power and 21 for money laundering – for offences committed between 2011 and 2013.

He is currently serving 12 years in Kajang Prison, having been convicted of misappropriating funds from SRC International. – October 12, 2022.
