THE International Islamic University Malaysia Students’ Union (IIUMSU) said it will take necessary steps to ensure students exercise their right to vote in the general election.

With many young and first-time voters expected to cast their ballots, IIUMSU said it will play its part.

“With weeks to go, we will work with groups, movements, bodies, and authorities to ensure qualified voters can return to their constituencies,” the student body said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of parliament and an impending general election, which must be held within 60 days.

Following the constitutional amendment to reduce the voting age from 21 years old to 18 years old, this will be the first election for this age group.

IIUMSU called Ismail’s announcement jaw-dropping, adding that this election will present many challenges to the nation.

The union added that it will pay close attention to the monsoon warnings.

“Participating in this election is one way for citizens to support policies that answer their communities’ needs and ensure they have a say in societal decisions.

“Therefore, citizens who are qualified to vote must exercise their right to do so,” it said. – October 11, 2022.
