Agencies ready for monsoon floods, Dewan Rakyat told

SOME 76,336 members across various agencies at state and district levels are geared up to face flooding from the upcoming monsoon season, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Mastura Mohd Yazid told the Dewan Rakyat.

She said that state disaster management committees are also at an optimum level of preparedness. 

“Around 76,336 members at all levels are fully ready, A total of 22,622 assets involving air, sea, medical and others are also ready,” Mastura said. 

“In terms of monitoring and early warning, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage is ready with 1,312 telemetry stations, 526 sirens, 1,571 straight gauge and 184 pumps. 

“RM50,000 has been allocated to each state, while RM1.08 million has been allocated to eight agencies with RM100,000 for each.

“The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has allocated RM30,000 for the purchase of two fibre boats and safety jackets for each state.” 

Mastura said the 6,100 temporary flood relief centres will also be opened, which will house an expected 1.6 million victims. 

A total of 140 food storage facilities, including 53 mini depots are available nationwide, she said.  

“Nadma is in the process of giving out 62,500 food kits and 127,272 collapsible tents nationwide.” 

However, a question from Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin (Hang Tuah Jaya-PH) on the readiness of agencies if the general election were held during the monsoon season, was shot down by Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun.
