WE seek only the simplest explanation from the members of Malaysia’s ruling coalition: why are they desperate to have the general election this year? Despite the Malaysian Meteorological Department warning of yet another troubling monsoon season to start next month and carry on until March next year. Are Malaysians expected to stretch the interpretation of our constitution or even rely on political analysts using jargon to complicate the basic equation of yet another “Squid Game”?

The nursery rhyme of 10 green bottles hanging on the wall sums up our nation’s leadership situation. At the mercy of either the judiciary or party’s disciplinary action has left many among them extremely apprehensive. Rather than risk losing their existing political position and freedom, many members in the current ruling coalition prefer to reboot the system to install their own operating system. The song “Aduh Malaysia” by Altimet mocking the obvious support for thievery in this country is equally fitting.

So whose mandate are the politicians referring to in a desperate call for a general election against all odds? Social media users are quick to call it #undibanjir should there be one this year. If indeed there is a democratic urgency to return Putrajaya to rightful leaders for a full socio-economic recovery, there are some crucial points to be considered.

What will be the litmus test to prioritise government asset mobilisation for disaster relief against transporting ballot boxes safely? Both are equally important to the future of democracy in this country. How will the temporary shelters be chosen against voting centres to safeguard both interests especially in the east coast areas? Not to say the least, if the ruling coalition leaders are geared up to move their election machinery despite the floods, would it have not been better to channel their eagerness to help victims hit by the disaster rather than cornering Malaysians to vote under duress?

It is comforting to know that Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said recently that it is not suitable to hold the federal polls this year as heavy rains and floods are expected to occur in mid-November. If it’s still being held… how are they going to ensure the safety of the people who are affected by the flood disaster?

We can only pray for serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference before it is too late. – October 3, 2022.
