LARRY Sng has declared that he is still Parti Bangsa Malaysia’s (PBM) president, hours after the party proclaimed Zuraida Kamaruddin its new president yesterday.
The Ampang lawmaker was earlier president-designate and was made president at its annual general meeting yesterday.
However, in a twist to events yesterday, Sng, who is the Julau lawmaker, said due process had to be followed if Zuraida was to take over.
“Inaccurate reporting. What I said was it’s my intention for Zuraida to take charge of PBM and a power transition will take place),” he said in a statement today, which was posted on his Facebook page.
“However, I have not resigned as president of PBM yet and I will not resign if elections are speculated to be held round the corner.
“Just to be clear, if an election is held before the transition is complete, I will still sign the watikah (appointment letter) for candidates in the 15th general election.”
Yesterday, PBM information chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid said Selangor representative Jaafar Wahyu had proposed Zuraida to take over the party’s number one position.
“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time and we hope the leadership can streamline the party’s work,” he was quoted as saying by news portal Free Malaysia Today.
He said PBM will hold a meeting to discuss the position of Sng.
He said there was a proposal for PBM to create three positions for deputy president.
Asked if Sng would fill one of the positions, Zakaria said: “Yes, that is our proposal.
“All the motions brought by the delegates in this convention were decided unanimously,” he was quoted as saying in the report.
In June, Sng announced Zuraida as PBM leader, which was unanimously adopted by members of the party’s political bureau and the supreme council.
The plantation industries and commodities minister was given the mandate to lead the party’s delegation in meetings and negotiations with other party leaders, especially pertaining to political cooperation. – October 2, 2022.
