THE Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has unanimously agreed to start the proceedings on the procurement of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) belonging to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) under the Home Ministry.
Its chairman, Wong Kah Woh said the PAC had agreed that the MMEA and the Home Ministry must come up with an explanation to the committee on the cause of the delay.
“PAC will summon the Home Ministry and the MMEA as well as the Finance Minister including the company that was given the contract to build the ships.”
“The date of the proceedings will be announced soon,” Wong said.
Recently, it was reported that three OPVs that should have been handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in 2020 were still under construction.
Its director-general Maritime Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som said the OPVs were being built by a local company, THHE Destini Sdn Bhd, in Pulau Indah, Selangor.
The Covid-19 pandemic in the country had contributed to the delay in the delivery of the vessels to the MMEA,” he said in a statement earlier this month.
He said the launch of OPV 1, which was scheduled on (September 13), could not be carried out because the vessel could not be brought to the location yet. – September 26, 2022.
