A MOTION that will ensure that elected representatives who defy party orders lose their membership automatically has been passed by DAP delegates, Anthony Loke Siew Fook said.

The party’s secretary-general stressed that an application will be sent to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to update the party’s constitution and incorporate the new rule.

“We hope the RoS can approve the application soon and allow us to implement the amendment before the next general election,” he said at a press conference today.

The party introduced the new rule at a special congress today that will outlaw party-hopping.

Loke told delegates this is in line with amendments made to the Federal Constitution, and hopes all DAP members today would support this initiative.

According to Loke, the amendment is to safeguard the party from a “loophole” in the anti-party hopping law, in which MPs sacked by their parties do not have to vacate their seats.

He then said he has full confidence that the Agong would give his royal consent to the anti-party hopping bill that was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 28 despite a delay in gazetting the bill.

He added that Pakatan Harapan (PH) believes Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will not break his promise that the anti-party hopping law would be gazetted before the next general election.

Asked about Muda joining PH, Loke revealed that a meeting will take place next week to discuss the party’s application to join the coalition.

Muda earlier this month had expressed its intention to join PH. – September 25, 2022.
