Political funding bill to be tabled in November, says minister

A BILL on political donations and funding will be tabled in the next parliament session, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said.

“This bill will be tabled for the first and second reading in the Dewan Rakyat in early and late November,” he said in a statement today.

Dewan Rakyat will meet for 32 days, on October 3 to November 29, and Dewan Negara, on November 21 to December 7

The de facto law minister said the government is confident the bill will pass.

He also said the National Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Center has prepared the scope and policy parameters outlined in the political donations bill and handed it over it to the attorney-general for scrutiny.

“I will hold an engagement session with representatives of the government and opposition members of parliament on September 28 to obtain views on the basic matters for the Political Donations Bill that is being drafted,” he said.

Last week, Wan Junaidi said the cabinet had agreed in principle to draft a bill on political contributions.

He said he would present the cabinet’s views on the proposed legal framework for the bill to the Political Transformation and Political Understanding Memorandum Technical Committee for fine-tuning before the parliamentary sitting. – September 24, 2022.
