6-day remand for businessman in Penang project graft case

A BUSINESSMAN has been remanded for six days, beginning today, for allegedly receiving RM19 million to stop investigations into Penang’s RM6.3 billion mega project.

The remand order was issued by magistrate Norhidayati Mohammad Nasroh, following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

The 37-year-old suspect was detained by MACC at 3.48pm yesterday when he went to the agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya to give his statement on the matter.

An MACC source said the businessman, whose wife is a leader of a civil society organisation, was believed to have received the money from the main contractor of the project to close MACC’s probe into the case.

He allegedly received the payment in stages in July and August last year.

The tunnel and highways project has been bogged by controversy, including the high cost of its feasibility studies, as well as payment made using state government land.

It has also been met with protests from residents over its economic, social and environmental impact. – Bernama, February 28, 2018.

    • Agreed fully, plus, there shd not be only selective prosecution. But, sad to say many other cases were just let go without any convincing verdict. I just don't have any confidence on this institution.
