Two senior editors of The Star suspended pending inquiry

TWO senior editors at The Star have been suspended pending an investigation into its front page on the first day of Ramadan on May 27.

During the suspension of editor-in-chief Leanne Goh Lee Yen and executive editor Dorairaj Nadason, editorial operations will be overseen by Star Media Group managing director and chief executive officer Wong Chun Wai, The Star reported this evening.

The newspaper said it would render its full cooperation to the Home Ministry and the police investigating the case.

The Star has apologised for the offending front page, which had the headline “Malaysian Terrorist Leader” above a picture of Muslims performing terawih prayers, which had caused an outcry among Muslims who said the way the page was composed gave the impression that all Muslims were terrorists.

The Home Ministry issued a show-cause letter to The Star while police said two investigations would be initiated into The Star under the Sedition Act and Section 298A of the Penal Code.

Section 298A of the Penal Code refers to causing disharmony, disunity and hatred by words either written or spoken. – May 30, 2017.
