VEHICLE sales in Malaysia jumped to 66,614 units in August compared with 17,923 in the same month last year, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

In a statement today, the association said the total industry volume for August was 36% higher than July (48,922 units), due to fulfilment of bookings by car companies received prior to June 30.

It said the year-to-date sales volume for August was 63% higher at 447,209 units compared with 274,600 units during the corresponding period last year.

Sales of passenger vehicles surged to 59,769 units in August versus 15,475 in August 2021, and sales of commercial vehicles rose to 6,845 units during the month under review from 2,448 units previously, MAA said.

In terms of total production, the association said 69,378 vehicles were produced in August compared with 13,961 units in the same month last year.

It said the production of passenger vehicles jumped to 64,282 units in August versus 12,897 in August 2021, while production of commercial vehicles rose to 5,096 units from 1,064 previously.

On the outlook for this month, MAA expects the sales volume to remain the same as August, due to chip shortages and components. – Bernama, September 19, 2022.
