POLICE have arrested a husband and wife on suspicion of abusing their eight-year-old nephew and six-year-old niece at a condominium in Taman Cahaya Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, today.
Ampang Jaya district police chief Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the suspects, ages 29 and 33, were detained at 6pm yesterday.
He said the female suspect was the younger sister of the children’s biological mother and had been taking care of the children following the death of their father two years ago.
According to Farouk, the mother did not wish to take care of her children.
“Police also found that both the children had bruises on their limbs and body,” he said in a statement tonight.
Farouk said the female suspect was unemployed and had no previous convictions, while her husband, who is an e-hailing driver, had one.
“The suspects tested negative for drugs. The children have been referred to Ampang Hospital for medical check-ups and the Social Welfare Department has been notified,” he added.
Police are due to apply for a remand order today under the Child Act.
Earlier, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department rescued the eight-year-old boy, who had been locked in a room at the condominium and had tried to escape through a fourth-floor window. – Bernama, September 17, 2022.
