Ex-works minister Samy Vellu dies at 86

FORMER MIC president S. Samy Vellu died this morning. He was 86.

Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also a former head of the party, was informed of the death by the deceased’s son, Vell Paari.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I received the tragic news of the demise of Samy Vellu the Former President of MIC and a legendary Minister in the Malaysian Cabinet from his son Vell Paari.

“To many of us ,he was the ultimate mentor. His contribution to the nation and to the Indian Community will be permanently etched in our memories,” he said on Facebook this morning.

“He led a full and glorious life and is going off filled with deep respect and appreciation,” he said

In a WhatsApp message, Vell Paari said funeral arrangements were being finalised for the former works minister.

Samy served as the Sungai Siput MP from 1974 to 2008. In 1983, he was appointed to the cabinet, where he served for 29 years.

He was works minister twice, from 1983 to 1989 and again from 1995 to 2008. He was energy and communications minister from 1989 to 1995.

In 1979, he become the MIC chief president for 31 years before making way for G. Palanivel in 2010.

In a brief statement, Samy’s former press secretary E. Sivabalan said the public could pay their respects after 2pm today at the home of the deceased at 19, Lengkongan Vethavanam, Batu 3 1/2, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

“(The) funeral (cortege) will leave the residence at 3pm tomorrow (September 16) and arrive at 4pm at the DBKL Crematorium, Cheras at Jalan Kuari, Taman Pertama, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur,” he said. – September 15, 2022.
