MCA has hit out at Umno minister Nazri Aziz for calling Robert Kuok a “pondan” for allegedly funding the DAP, saying that the wealthy businessman was an icon to Malaysians.
Its religious harmony bureau chairman Ti Lian Ker said that Nazri’s attack on the Hong Kong-based tycoon was not in keeping with Malaysian culture.
“MCA is of the view that Robert Kuok is a businessman that have benefited Malaysians in general.
He was responding to Nazri, who had challenged the 94-year-old tycoon to return to Malaysia and contest in the next general election.
“Don’t be a ‘pondan’ (effeminate). Don’t be a hen (ayam betina) which hides behind the wall in Hong Kong,” the tourism and culture minister told Malaysiakini earlier today.
Nazri had also said many Chinese, although not as wealthy as Kuok, live in Malaysia and continued to develop the nation together with other races.
“It is better for people like Kuok to surrender their citizenship,” he added.
In a separate statement, MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan warned the attack may sour race relations.
“The victim will not just be Kuok, but inter-communal ties,” he said.
Ong said Nazri has no right to demand any Malaysian to surrender his or her citizenship as it is not within his authority to do this.
Ong pointed out that Kuok was not just a successful businessman, but a person who has contributed to the country.
Nazri is the latest Umno leader to attack Kuok after Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had earlier said the billionaire was ungrateful in funding the DAP to topple the BN.
DAP today challenged Umno leaders, including Prime Minister Najib Razak and Tengku Adnan to show evidence that the opposition party had received funds from Kuok.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Umno must apologise if it failed to come up with proof.
“This (allegation) is a lie. We want Umno, Najib or Tengku Adnan to show proof that Kuok gave money to DAP.
“I want to know too (if money was given). As party secretary-general, I have no knowledge that he had ever given DAP money.
“If they can’t show proof, they must apologise to Kuok and DAP,” Guan Eng told a press conference in Penang.
Ti said that Nazri’s closeness to Lim Guan Eng is open knowledge, adding that his comment was not helping the ruling government.
“His statement on the surface may seem to be lambasting Kuok but in effect is not helping BN or MCA but helping DAP and Lim Guan Eng instead.
“Why train your guns on Kuok and not DAP vis-a-vis the Penang (undersea) tunnel project issue?”
Ti said that Kuok as a businessman had every right to support whichever political party he saw fit.
“However if there’s any treacherous acts or political agenda to undermine the government or the stability, we have our laws and intelligence to deal with this.”
Ti said that as the election draws closer, politicians should maintain their cool and not go overboard in their attacks or counter-attacks.
“We are confident BN is a better political party with clear distinct policies and products that will sell better to the voters.
“Not only Kuok, but all businessmen who have benefited from the BN policies and political stability should be thankful and reciprocate with their support.” – February 26, 2018.
