PRIME Minister Ismail Sabrri Yaakob must consult Perikatan Nasional before dissolving parliament,  PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said.

He said this is because PN holds the majority in parliament and will not allow Umno to make a unilateral decision on when to call a general election.

“The majority of the cabinet is not from Umno, but PN. So the PM cannot make any decision about elections,” Hadi said at the PAS assembly in Alor Star.

Hadi, who is the Marang MP, said Ismail has yet to inform the coalition partners when a general election will be held.

“The PM should inform us (Perikatan) first.”

Ismail is under pressure from his party leaders to hasten the dissolution of parliament for polls to be held at once.

The pressure intensified after former Umno president Najib Razak was jailed for corruption. He has a 12-year jail sentence to serve and a RM210 million fine to pay.

Several other Umno leaders are also facing trial for graft and power abuse.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi faces 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and corruption.

Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, was earlier this week found guilty of corruption charges involving a solar project for rural schools in Sarawak.

Zahid has demanded that a general election be held at once to capitalise on Umno’s winning streak in Johor and Malacca. – September 3, 2022.
