CONTROVERSIAL rapper Namewee is due to be released today after four days in remand but his fate is yet unknown as police await instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers on whether or not to press charges.
“Namewee’s remand order ends today. We will send (the investigation paper) to the DPP (deputy public prosecutor) for further action,” said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi after the monthly police assembly at Bukit Aman this morning.
No decision has been made on whether police will extend the rapper’s remand order or release him, pending the DPP’s orders.
Namewee was arrested on February 22 after giving his statement on his YouTube Chinese New Year music video, which provoked a spate of police reports filed by angry groups.
He is being investigated under Section 298a of the Penal Code for causing public disharmony and under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network service.
If charged and found guilty, Namawee could be jailed for up to five years.
In the music video, Like a Dog Namewee sings that dogs in different countries have different barks, and while American dogs go “woof woof” and Indonesian dogs, “bow wow”, Malaysian dogs go “mari mari wang wang” (Malay for come come money money).
He is accompanied by background dancers in dog masks, who dance provocatively and scatter money to the beat of the music.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had denied insulting Islam in the music video, which was released to coincide with the Chinese New Year and uploaded on February 11.
It has received 1.1 million views, to date. – February 26, 2018.
