DR Mahathir Mohamad today hit out at the Malays for condoning thievery and corrupt practices of Malay leaders such as Najib Razak. 

He also blamed Najib for changing the Malay mindset on such matters to the extent that they now accept these acts.

“Previously, the Malays looked down on people who steal. They would be embarrassed if any family member is involved in criminal activities,” said Dr Mahathir in a blog entry.

“But now, they do not feel such embarrassment. What is there to be ashamed of? Najib has sowed such a thought in their minds. 

“He is the boss, and the boss can steal. If the boss himself is not ashamed of stealing, the Malays, too, need not feel ashamed.”

He said the Malays are now comfortable kissing the hands of crooks as long as they get some rewards, either in the form of positions or cash.

“This is Najib’s greatest achievement – that the Malays need not feel embarrassed now,” he said.

Dr Mahathir has been consistent in lashing out at Najib for behaving as though nothing has happened despite being convicted on seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM42 million. He has been sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million. The Federal Court is currently hearing his appeal.

Earlier this month, Dr Mahathir formed Gerakan Tanah Air, a coalition aimed at strengthening the Malays and defeating Umno in the next general election. – August 21, 2022.
