PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has issued an updated version of his divisive 1981 decree: this time making it haram (forbidden) for Muslims to either join or support DAP.
Selangor DAP leader Edry Faizal Yusof said the original Amanat Hadi (Hadi’s decree) was aimed at Umno, PAS’ traditional rival for the Malay vote.
However, as the 14th general election looms, Hadi has now trained his guns on DAP, PAS’ former ally-turned-rival in the Pakatan Harapan opposition coalition, said Edry Faizal.
It is widely known that the 1981 decree had started the practice of takfiri among PAS members, who would label Muslims who supported Umno as infidels.
“Again, due to political considerations while PAS is desperate, Hadi has used religion to declare that it is haram for Muslims to join DAP or to support DAP,” Edry Faizal said in a statement.
“It is evident that Hadi wants to revive a decree that breeds a culture of strife, similar to what was done in Amanat Hadi 1.0.”
The new version of this decree was issued through Hadi’s column in PAS mouth piece Harakahdaily.
Although Hadi did not specifically name DAP in his writing, it was clear which party the former was referring to, said Edry Faizal, as Hadi mentioned DAP’s “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan.
“The irony is that while Hadi attempted to encourage peace and harmony in his writing, he is unable to get rid of his radical attitude.”
In the 1980s, the original Amanat Hadi led PAS members to declare that it was forbidden to pray with imam from Umno or to even eat meat slaughtered by Umno members.
Former senior police officers have claimed that the Amanat Hadi had influenced a band of PAS followers in a remote village in Kedah to attack security forces in what is now known as the 1985 Memali incident.
Edry Faizal said Hadi’s new decree against DAP comes as the PAS president is becoming friendlier with Umno, a party which he once demonised.
“He is becoming more similar with Umno in his writing, as he is using the spectre of the May 13 racial riots to strike fear into Malaysians,” said Edry Faizal.
“In the hands of politicians, religion just becomes a tool to further their interests.
“Malaysia does not need Taliban rulers whose role is to ‘forbid this and that’, and declare people infidels.” – February 25, 2018.
