THE City Hall permit for home renovations is now valid for only a year.

The Star reported today that the new ruling was announced yesterday to address the nuisance of homeowners whose renovation work appear unceasing.

City Hall Building Control Department director Norizan Sulaiman said homeowners will have renew the permit if they fail to complete their renovations within a year and that “they must give a very good reason” for the delay.

Homeowners will have to apply to the One-Stop Centre (OSC) committee headed by Mayor Mahadi Che Ngah.

The permit can only be renewed up to three times.

Norizan said this is due to a rising number of nuisance complaints.

The city’s Uniform Building By-Law 1984 does not provide a timeframe for renovations to be completed.

Kuala Lumpur residents with grievances against a neighbour’s renovations may appeal to the DBKL for action under the Local Government Act.

In extreme cases, they can file a civil suit against the neighbour or even sue the local authority to compel it to take action. – August 16, 2022.
