CONTROVERSIAL preacher Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu was charged at the magistrate’s court in Kangar, Perlis, today with hurting and threatening to murder a woman.

For the first charge, the 38-year-old was accused of voluntarily causing hurt to a woman in a house at Taman Melati Indah on July 14.

He faces a maximum jail term of one year and fine up to RM2,000, or both, if convicted.

For the second charge, he was charged with threatening to murder the same 38-year-old woman at the same place and date. He faces imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both.

The court set August 23 for mention and for submission of documents.

Earlier this year, the High Court allowed an application by Zamri to annul a suit filed against him and the government over its alleged failure to act on his statements that purportedly insulted other races and religions.

On April 28 last year, A. Radhakrishnan and C. Arunkumar, both members of the Pertubuhan Hindhu Dharma Malaysia and Malaysian Hindu Youth Council, sued the government, police and Zamri, claiming that the authorities had failed to exercise their duty in maintaining peace by refusing to take action against Zamri.

They said Zamri had posted nine videos on his social media accounts that touched on the sensitivities of Hindus in the country. They claimed police did not conduct a thorough investigation in their reports.

They also demanded that Zamri apologise to Hindus in the country and pay RM1 million in damages to the two civil society groups. – August 2, 2022.
