COMPELLED by the court to disclose his total assets, former prime minister Najib Razak on July 20 declared he has assets worth RM4.49 million as of June 30, according to news portal Malaysiakini.

The largest of his assets is a RM2.52 million deposit balance in Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd, with the second largest being RM1.24 million in his current account with Affin Bank. 

The asset disclosure was to abide by a Kuala Lumpur High Court ruling as part of the March 24 Mareva injunction against him by SRC International Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Gandingan Mentari.

It is part of SRC International and Mentari’s RM42 million civil action suit against Najib. 

The portal stated the court document showed Najib owned seven plots of land and property in Pahang and Selangor with a total value of RM460,987, and eight vehicles – five Mercedes Benz, a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, a Honda EX5 motorcycle and Kawasaki ZG motorcycle – collectively valued at RM252,000. 

Four of the Mercedes Benz, the Bentley, and the Kawasaki were listed in the filing as “gifts”.

A Mareva injunction is a court asset-freeze order. It prohibits a party from removing any assets from the jurisdiction of the court pending the outcome of a related suit. 

The injunction therefore prohibits Najib from removing, disposing, dealing with or diminishing the value of any assets in or outside Malaysia up to the value of RM42 million, pending the final disposal of the main suit. 

Najib, who also faced a similar injunction order taken by 1Malaysia Development Bhd in relation to a US$8 billion (RM35 billion) civil suit, was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million in July 2020 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court after he was found guilty of graft related to RM42 million he received from SRC International. 

After failing in his appeal against the conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal on December 8 last year, Najib took his appeal to the Federal Court.

The Federal Court will hear his appeal from August 15. – August 2, 2022.
