Police wrap up probe into alleged rape by religious speaker

POLICE have wrapped up investigations into a case of a religious speaker allegedly raping a minor.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Azmi Abu Kassim, when contacted, said the investigation papers were submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office today and police would await further instructions.

On July 28, Azmi was reported to have said that the suspect, in his 30s, was handed over to the Perak police after his remand order obtained by the Kuala Lumpur police expired on July 27.

Kuala Selangor police had reportedly arrested the religious speaker at 4.50pm on July 18 for investigations under section 376 of the penal code for rape and section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Based on initial investigations, the suspect and the minor got to know each other after the girl contacted him on social media on religious matters. They subsequently got into a relationship in May last year.

So far,  four police reports have been lodged against the suspect, two in Selangor and one each in Kuala Lumpur and Perak. – Bernama, August 2, 2022.
