THE national swimming camp made waves at the Asean University Games (AUG) today when they broke the championship record and clinched the gold medal in the men’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay.
The quartet comprising Welson Sim, Terence Ng, Low Zheng Yong and Sebastian Soon set a new Games record of 7 minutes 32.34 seconds (7:32.34s) after defeating the Indonesian quartet in the final held at Ban Yang Noi campus in Thailand.
The national quartet broke the championship record of 7:34.21s made by another Malaysian team comprising Keith Lim, Kevin Yeap, Yeap Zheng Yang and Foong Wei Tze in AUG 2016 in Singapore.
The swimming camp also won another gold medal through Soon in the men’s 400m individual medley event after he defeated compatriot Low, who won silver.
Goh Chia Tong and Ong Yong Qi missed out on gold but won silver and bronze, respectively, in the women’s 400m individual backstroke event.
The swimming camp, which aimed to bring home eight gold medals, succeeded in winning five gold medals at this year’s AUG. – Bernama, July 29, 2022.
