Cops deny recruitment drive by Sulu sultan’s descendants in Lahad Datu

SABAH police have dismissed claims that there is a movement to recruit individuals to joined the Sulu sultanate’s cause in Lahat Datu.

State Police Commissioner Idris Abdullah said early investigations have turned up no evidence of such activity.  

“Police investigations and intelligence have found that there is no such group recruiting Filipino citizens of Sulu descent in Sabah,” he said in a statement.

He said police takes seriously allegations on social media that a Sulu group was actively recruiting people in Lahad Datu reminded the public not to spread fake information or news that could cause public alarm.

However, he said Sabah police are conducting an investigation on reports of Sulu Sultaniyah Darul Islam personal identification documents being issued.

“Preliminary investigations found that the activity was carried out by an individual who took the opportunity to make personal profits,” he said in a statement today.

Prior to this, Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) secretary Hishamuddin Hashim claimed that there were activities being carried out by certain parties to recruit local citizens in Lahad Datu by providing identity documents related to the Sulu group. – Bernama, July 28, 2022.
