The Malaysian Insight looks back at the history of the worst incidences of power outage reported in the country.

1992:

On September 29, the country suffered a long and widespread blackout caused by lightning striking a transmission facility and causing a rolling failure in the transmission and distribution system. The outage lasted days.

1996:

On August 3, a transmission line near the Sultan Ismail power station in Paka, Terengganu, tripped, causing all power stations in Peninsular Malaysia to collapse.

This resulted in a massive power failure for several hours. In the wake of that, the government moved to allow five independent power producers to enter the electricity-generation business.

2003:

On September 4, several states, including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor suffered a blackout due to a power failure. The power outage lasted for five hours from 10am-3pm.

2005:

In February 17, a fault on the main transmission line near Serendah, Selangor caused a power outage in the northern states including Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.

2013:

The last major outage was reported on June 27, this time in Sarawak.

A fault at the Bakun Dam caused a trip across various power grids, resulting in major traffic congestion.

In July, parts of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Puchong also suffered a blackout. – July 27, 2022.
