THE regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has told police not to pursue investigations into an environmental activist whose tweet allegedly insulted royalty, after her plight was reported by the media.

The regent also apologised to the activist, Noor Jehan Abu Bakar, for being late to an event which prompted her tweet.

“I just found out about this, I have asked police to leave her alone, please don’t create drama,” Tengku Hassanal said in an Instagram story.

He also posted a news article about Noor Jehan being summoned by police in Kuantan, Pahang.

In his apology, the regent said:” My sincere apologies for being late for the event. I was not feeling well that morning and had to take a few precautions for everyone’s safety.

“I really appreciate your time and concern. Thank you.”

Noor Jehan, who heads the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Pahang chapter, was summoned for her statement by Kuantan police yesterday afternoon.

They wanted to question her about a tweet last week concerning a two-hour wait for an unnamed VIP’s arrival at a tree-planting event on July 18.

She said, over the weekend, others involved at the event had been called in by police about her tweet, which prompted her to delete it.

Noor Jehan said she did not intend to slander anyone and was also puzzled at how her tweet became the subject of a police investigation, since she had only posted it on Twitter for her followers.

Kuantan police chief Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu was reported saying yesterday that Noor Jehan was being investigated under the penal code for defamatory statements, as well as the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998 on uploading content offensive to others. – July 26, 2022.
