THE Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry has pinpointed four main thrusts will become the measures to take to ensure long-lasting national food security.

Its minister Dr Ronald Kiandee said these were availability, access, food safety and nutrition, as well as natural sources and sustainability.

“Tackling food security requires continuous effort and we have the capability to produce what the country needs.

“We only need to import products we don’t produce (or have insufficient supply of) in the country. That’s why ministries and agencies are using various methods to boost the level of sustainable food products in our country,” he told reporters today.

He added that one such continuous effort was the ministry’s attempt at reducing the country’s dependence on foreign rice imports, that is now at 30%.

He said food supply in the country was stable and various efforts under the National Agrofood Policy 2.0 are being carried out to ensure the availability of food for all people in the country. – Bernama, July 24 2022.
