DAP chairman Guan Eng today asked if Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had given the nod for the attorney-general’s officers to meet representatives of Low Taek Jho to discuss a settlement offer in connection with the 1MDB scandal.
Lim told Ismail to reveal whether he had been informed of AG Idrus Harun’s decision to set up meetings with the lawyers of the fugitive businessman better known as Jho Low.
“Apparently key relevant ministries remain in the dark about this meeting, leading to troubling questions about whether the decision to meet Jho Low’s representatives was (made) unilaterally and arbitrarily by Idrus,” Lim said in a statement.
Lim wondered if Idrus had acted independently on such an important matter.
“If Ismail Sabri is aware and had sanctioned… the meeting with Jho Low’s representatives, (did) Ismail possess the authority to do so without cabinet approval since key ministries were left in the dark?”
The Edge Markets recently reported that Low, who is accused of stealing billions of ringgit from 1MDB, had offered to pay the government RM1.5 billion to settle charges against him.
Quoting unnamed sources, the business daily said the government had rejected the offer.
Former AG Mohamed Apandi Ali has confirmed that law firm Kobre & Kim had reached out to him on behalf of Low to facilitate meetings with the Malaysian government to discuss the repatriation of money allegedly stolen from 1Malaysia Development Bhd. – July 18, 2022.
